It is not unusual for our patients at Abel, Phan & Associates to ask if certain procedures or treatment options are “better” than others. Our dentists, Drs. Chuong Phan and Anna Abel of Sterling, Virginia, work with patients to determine what is best for them. Decisions about treatment are highly personal to each patient, as well as their unique needs, preferences, and oral health goals. Generally, though, there may be some advantages to certain treatments. For instance, implants can be the preferred and truly permanent alternative to conventional dentures due to their unique design.
Implants are an option when replacing teeth. They are small, cylindrical-shaped posts. When positioned in the jawbone, these posts are designed to adjust naturally to the surrounding tissue. The implant can then function as a tooth root to hold the prosthetic tooth in place. A crown may be attached to one implant, while a bridge or denture can be retained in the jaw with two and as few as four implants, respectively.
Traditional, non-implant supported bridges are dentures retained by surrounding, crowned anchor teeth, natural suction in the mouth, and products such as denture adhesive. These options do not support the strength and density of the bone in the jaw. Therefore, the fit of dentures can change over time.
Since proper fit is crucial to patient satisfaction with their dentures, an ill-fitting appliance can result in discomfort and problems with speech and chewing. These dentures must be relined, rebased, adjusted, or replaced.
Implant-retained crowns, bridges, and dentures are designed to last. They are connected to the jawbone. The supportive bone continues to get stimulation from the teeth and through functions like grinding food into smaller pieces. In turn, implant teeth continue to feel and function well without ongoing adjustments or high maintenance. With proper care, your implants can last a lifetime.
Be sure to clean around the implant properly. The biggest threat to prosthetic teeth is peri-implantitis, a gum disease-like condition that develops in the tissues surrounding the implant. We can advise you on good brushing and flossing techniques and other ways to keep your new smile strong.
