Traditional dental bridges and dentures are effective at filling gaps in your smile. However, they generally do not last forever. Eventually, these options sustain the effects of wear and tear. To retain a good fit and to support healthy function, such options need to be adjusted and/or replaced on an ongoing basis. With crowns, bridges, and dentures that are supported by dental implants, your new teeth can last a lifetime. To get the most out of your implants and enjoy the full, long-lasting benefits, it is important to follow all instructions for aftercare provided by our team at Abel, Phan & Associates in Sterling, Virginia.
We will wait for the implants to heal or integrate with the bone around them. This process allows for implants to become a part of the jaw. In turn, they are stabilized well in the jawbone. Implants can effectively hold the restorations (crowns, bridges, dentures) in place because they are secure in the jaw. As with all aspects of the treatment experience, this process can vary from patient to patient; however, it generally takes several months for the bone to join or grow around each implant naturally.
Yes. We will review what is considered normal/potential side effects before your appointment. In addition to swelling of the gums and face, patients commonly experience slight bruising, tenderness at the implant site(s), and minor bleeding. As needed, we can prescribe medications, antibiotics, or antiseptic rinses for your comfort and healing. Of course, if you are concerned about how your mouth is healing – including worsening or persistent pain – we need to hear from you! Contact us as soon as possible to discuss what is going on, determine the next steps to get you feeling better, and ensure you are on the right path to healing.
With many oral surgeries, it is generally advised to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth that was treated and to refrain from putting too much pressure on the treatment sites. For the first week, consume only soft foods. Avoid hard, sticky, and crunchy snacks and meal choices. We recommend nutrient-dense foods like steamed vegetables, yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, fruit smoothies, and soups.
Anything that can put stress or “overload” the implant must be avoided. That includes conditions like bruxism or chronic teeth grinding. We will assess for these conditions before your implants are placed. It may be necessary to create a custom-fit appliance (nightguard) to protect the implants and the rest of your teeth from damage. Alcohol and the use of tobacco products can also impair healing and should be avoided or minimized throughout the process. Vigorously brushing and cleaning the implant sites, as well as lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercise, can increase blood flow and lead to complications, such as excess bleeding. These activities should also be avoided for some time, as Drs Chuong Phan and Anna Abel recommended.
We will also advise on ways to care for your new teeth long after the implants have healed and been restored with a crown, bridge, or denture. We welcome your specific questions during a consultation. Call Abel, Phan & Associates in Sterling, VA, at (571) 450-9848 to schedule yours today.
