At our Potomac Falls, Virginia area office in Sterling, state-of-the-art technologies complement an unwavering dedication. These technologies and corresponding training allow us to provide the latest, most sought-after treatment options. Options provided by our dentist duo, Drs Anna Abel and Chuong Phan, include dental implants for missing teeth.
Implants are an attractive way to replace missing or failing teeth. Due to their unique design, implants are renowned for their lifelike feel in the mouth, natural appearance, and lasting functionality. These benefits are rooted in the stability of modern alternatives to traditional bridges or dentures. Implants can replace a single tooth or a complete set of teeth.
The implant is just one component of the replacement tooth. This cylindrical-shaped “post” is designed to function as an artificial tooth root. No other form of tooth replacement accounts for the roots of the teeth. Once surgically placed in the jawbone, the implant naturally fuses to the surrounding bone. The implant is later restored with a dental crown. The crown is securely attached to the implant in the jawbone, ensuring stability. The utmost stability supports natural and efficient chewing and other functions and promotes lasting bone strength and health. It keeps the devastating process of bone loss at bay.
Implants require good oral health and jawbone structure to fuse with the bone and fully support restorations. Poor gum health can hinder implant healing and result in unstable restorations. And, even if you have bone loss in the jaw, you may still benefit from implants! Our team at Abel, Phan & Associates may recommend a preparatory procedure – bone grafting – to build up the bone before the placement of your implants.
Implant-supported systems for tooth replacement are highly versatile! Depending on your needs, Drs Abel and Phan may apply their considerable expertise to recommend a crown to replace a single missing or irreparably damaged tooth. Or, a few strategically placed implants may be advised to support a dental bridge among those missing a few teeth. Even a few expertly placed dental implants can support a partial or full denture.
This alternative to conventional bridges and dentures is mainly conservative and doesn’t require the alteration of otherwise healthy teeth to “anchor” the bridge (as with traditional bridges). These systems also require minimal maintenance; dentures held in place by artificial tooth roots secured in the jawbone do not require additional support from denture adhesive. The jawbone remains strong due to the stimulation from prosthetic teeth, ensuring a good fit for implant dentures. The need for ongoing relining, rebasing, replacement, and other adjustments is avoided.
